OUR HISTORY
Providing high quality surveying, construction and engineering since 1956
In 1956, after years of working as a surveyor in rural Wyoming County, Stuart Milnes began operating Milnes Surveying out of a law firm's office in the growing community of Tunkhannock. One of his first projects was assisting Procter & Gamble with finding an appropriate location for building a factory in the area.
Milnes was closely involved with the project, surveying the tract of land and helping to design the factory's layout. The plant, which opened in 1966, quickly gained a reputation as one of Procter & Gamble's best manufacturing plants worldwide, and one of our region's largest employers.
Stuart's son Tom joined the family business and started Milnes Engineering. Father and son worked together on many design projects. As the company's clients and staff grew, the decision was made to purchase a house on nearby Bridge Street and renovate it into the company's first official headquarters.
Stuart's sons Gene and Paul joined the company in the mid-1970s. Gene joined the company as an accountant after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. Paul, who was a licensed civil engineer, joined the company in 1975.
In 1976, Milnes Construction was incorporated, making the Milnes Companies a one-stop shop for all commercial general construction needs.
Stuart Milnes retired in 1980. The business expanded to a third generation of Milnes' family employees, when Tom's son George started working for the company as a teenager, cutting brush for the surveyors. George worked his way up to his current position as General Superintendent.
As business continued to grow under Tom's leadership, the Milnes Companies outgrew their office space on Bridge Street. In 1995, the Milnes family and employees were proud to move into their newly constructed corporate headquarters on Frear Hill Road, where they are still located today.
Tom's daughter Karen joined the family business in 2001 as an administrative assistant, and eventually moved into her current role as Chief Financial Officer.
In April 2020, Chief Executive Officer Tom Milnes passed away. Tom, along with his brothers Paul and Gene, led the company through tremendous growth, capitalizing on numerous project opportunities. Many of the buildings you see today driving through Wyoming County and the region were due to his leadership and foresight.
